Safety & Emergencies
School safety and disaster preparedness is a cooperative effort between The City of El Segundo, El Segundo School District, El Segundo Police Department and the El Segundo Fire Department. We hold drills each month to practice our procedures with our students and staff. All School sites within El Segundo Unified School District have coordinated safety plans and communicate them with parents and community throughout the year.
Center Street School staff are prepared to act quickly to ensure the safety of our students. Our teachers, staff, and students have instructions and procedures they follow so that they are safe. For example, in case of an earthquake, students and teachers drop, cover, and hold. If there is a chemical spill, students and staff shelter in place and block air passages.
In the event of any emergency or other disaster during school hours, your support and cooperation are essential. Please read below for the most important things you can do:
Make sure your Emergency Contact information is current.
Remain calm and cooperative. WALK to school if possible. Streets may be needed for emergency vehicles.
Do not telephone the school as the telephone lines may be needed for emergency communications.
If students have been evacuated, come to the Reunion Gate at the California Street entrance and wait to begin the check-out procedure. ID will be required. DO NOT GO DIRECTLY TO THE FIELD or enter the school from any other gate.
Once you have been identified, a walkie-talkie or megaphone will be used to communicate with teachers on the yard to locate your child. Your child(ren) will be sent to the Reunion Gate and you may take them home.
DO NOT WALK TO YOUR CHILD'S CLASS. This will interfere with the work of our safety team. It is of paramount importance that the staff be able to remain calm and care for all students.
Tune to KNX 1070 AM, KFWB 980 AM, KFI 640 AM for emergency announcements.
All children will be kept at school under supervision until we are able to make contact with a parent/guardian. The school is equipped with emergency medical supplies, water and various types of equipment to respond to emergencies. Each staff member is automatically a civil defense employee in times of emergencies and is required by law to remain on campus to assist until dismissed by administration.
Lastly, please remember that our schools are one of the safest places for your children to be.
Disaster Preparedness
Center Street School has a comprehensive safety plan in collaboration with ESUSD and the City of El Segundo including ESPD and ESFD.
This plan covers multiple types of disasters and other school emergencies.
One of the following drills is conducted monthly:
Fire
Earthquake
Shelter in Place – in case of poor air quality due to surrounding industries.
Lock-down
Communication
There is a city-wide emergency communication system in place. All schools and the district office share a radio system with ESPD for emergency communication.
In the Event of a Fire
Students exit the building in an orderly manner and meet in a designated area on the school blacktop.
Roll is taken to account for all students and staff.
All adults working and volunteering on campus will evacuate and check-in at command central.
All students, staff and volunteers remain in designated area and await further instruction from ESFD.
In the Event of an Earthquake
All personnel drop and cover until shaking stops.
Students exit the building in an orderly manner and meet in a designated area on the school blacktop.
Roll is taken to account for all students and staff.
All adults working and volunteering on campus will evacuate and check-in at command central.
Search and rescue team will be deployed if needed.
In the event of a major earthquake, stations such as, first aid, temporary lavatories and reunion area will be assembled.
All students, staff and volunteers remain in designated area and await further instruction from ESFD.
Shelter in Place (Compromised Air Quality)
An announcement is made via loudspeaker to shelter in place.
Students and staff remain indoors or immediately report to the closest indoor space.
Doors, windows and vents are sealed with duct tape and wet towels.
Office communicates via email and/or telephone regarding status.
All students, staff and volunteers remain in shelter and await further instruction.
Lock Down
An announcement is made via loudspeaker to shelter in place.
Students and staff remain indoors or immediately report to the closest indoor space.

Emergency Response Training
All teachers are trained annually to respond to potential emergencies and threats, including violent intruder response training. Students also receive developmentally appropriate training on responding to events. Please see below for the content that is shared with students:
