El Segundo High School is proud to be one of three Los Angeles-area high schools participating in Project Lead the Way through partnerships with the California Society of Anesthesiologists and UCLA Health’s Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine.
The nonprofit program advises teachers through the process of developing a four-year biomedical science curriculum pathway for high school students interested in pursuing medical careers. The program also provides mentorship and classroom hands-on demonstrations for students from practicing physicians and other volunteering professionals in the field.
In the most recent visit featured in this article by UCLA Health, a team of UCLA Health anesthesiologists led ESHS students through exercises and demonstrations using ultrasound technology to explore human anatomy and how it responds to nerve blocks and epidurals.
The visits are mutually enriching for participating students and medical staff. The article quotes a volunteer anesthesiology resident as stating: “It reminds me why I went into this field in the first place.” One student was equally enthusiastic about the visit: “These visits are incredible. I’ve absolutely loved them.”
ESHS students interested in pursuing a career in the medical field may enroll in our offered Project Lead the Way classes when registering.
