Dear ESUSD Family,
On Tuesday night, the Board of Education approved the hiring of two new administrators who will serve the families of our El Segundo secondary schools starting in the 2023-24 school year.
We are pleased to share that Julia Straszewski will be the new Assistant Principal at El Segundo High School, while Andrea Burke will be the Assistant Principal at El Segundo Middle School. The hiring process for both vacancies included paper screening to identify candidates who were highly qualified, an initial screening interview, a comprehensive panel interview, a finalist interview, and extensive reference checks.
Assistant Principal, El Segundo High School
Ms. Straszewski has experience both as a Spanish teacher in the Bonita Unified School District and a Teacher on Special Assignment (TOSA) in the Culver City Unified School District. She brings a wealth of experience in the areas of multi-tiered systems of support, intervention, and parent engagement.
Ms. Straszewski was described by a former supervisor as thoughtful, super organized, detail oriented, and always student centered. In addition, her warmth, focus on relationship building, and eagerness to support all students stood out to the committee and made her the perfect addition to the Eagle administration.
Julia earned a bachelor’s degree from Cal Poly Pomona and a master’s degree from Azusa Pacific University. She is currently completing a doctorate in education at Loyola Marymount University.
Assistant Principal, El Segundo Middle School
Ms. Burke most recently served as a Magnet Coordinator at Marina Del Rey Middle School. Prior to becoming the coordinator, she served as the Dean of Students and a teacher at both the upper elementary and middle school level. Ms. Burke has worked in the field of education since 2002.
Andrea has a strong understanding of school safety, discipline, and positive behavior intervention support, making her an excellent addition to our middle school. She was described by a former supervisor as being approachable, maintaining high expectations, and being well-liked by faculty, students, and families.
Andrea earned a bachelor’s degree from Whittier College and has two master’s degrees—one from the University of Southern California and one from Cal State Northridge.
Please join me in congratulating Julia Straszewski and Andrea Burke on their new assignments and welcoming them to ESUSD!
With Gratitude,
Melissa Moore, Ed.D.
