Headshot of Dr. Moore

Dear El Segundo Unified School Families and Community,

It is with a wide spectrum of emotions that
I am announcing my retirement as your Superintendent effective June 30, 2024. This decision, made with joy, anticipation, apprehension and acceptance marks the end of a noteworthy chapter in my life. It has been my distinct honor and privilege to lead this school district for a decade, alongside an extremely talented team of dedicated faculty, staff, teachers, administrators, Cabinet and Board Members.

As I reflect on our journey as a school district, I am filled with immense pride and gratitude for the steadfast partnership, trust, and support you've extended to me, our Board of Education and our staff. ESUSD’s motto of Transforming Education for a Changing World has served as the framework for our collective efforts and has both redefined and strengthened our foundation. A few highlights of our time together include not only significant academic performance and awards, but the establishment of an ongoing revenue stream by investing $16M of the $22.6M from the sale of the Imperial Street School, development of our comprehensive Graduate Profile, adoption of the RULER Program for social-emotional learning, and passage of Measure ES, a $92M bond measure which has allowed us to address critical facility needs district-wide in the areas of safety, technology, modernization and new construction It is simply remarkable that the District will dedicate three new buildings during this schoolyear.  These achievements are not just mine but are a testament to the contributions and hard work of stakeholders within our District.

However, more than these accomplishments, what I cherish most are the relationships I have formed. Over the past decade, I am extremely grateful to have had the opportunity to work for and with twelve devoted individuals who served our community as Board Members.  First off, I would like to thank the 2014 ESUSD Board of Education for hiring me, entrusting me with the tremendous opportunity to lead this phenomenal school district—ESUSD is an absolute gem that shines brightly, as every facet of our organization is unique and beautiful. To all Board Members who followed, I extend my genuine gratitude for your collaborative spirit, tremendous encouragement and unwavering support as a member of the governing team that has directly contributed towards our District's success which has led to local, state and national recognitions.

As I step into this new chapter of my life, I carry with me many fond memories, as El Segundo is indeed a truly special place. I extend my deepest gratitude to each of you for your collaboration and friendship over the years. I am confident that the commitment of teamwork, innovation and inclusion will continue to thrive and succeed under the capable hands of our amazing team of employees. To head up that team, the Board of Education will promptly begin the process of selecting the next Superintendent and will keep you informed of the process. Whomever they hire will be lucky to serve this outstanding community in this important role as I have been honored to do. Please know I plan to finish strong and continue to lead the District during my remaining time here.

I will always carry a piece of El Segundo Unified School District in my heart. Thank you for allowing me the privilege of serving the students of this extraordinary community as their Superintendent.

With Gratitude,

Melissa Moore, Ed.D.
