Two El Segundo Unified School District employees presented an update on enrollment and staffing during the Board of Education meeting on October 8.
Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services Marisa Janicek and Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources Melissa Gooden opened the presentation with a discussion about enrollment trends and future projections.
Over the past six years, student enrollment has remained stable, consistently meeting projections each year. Thanks to investments from the El Segundo Education Foundation, class sizes have been reduced in fourth and fifth grades as well as secondary math. The district anticipates 371 new enrollments by the 2026-27 school year.
Ninety-six percent of students who attended El Segundo Middle School transitioned to El Segundo High School. This strong retention rate is evident across all grade levels, with enrollment numbers consistent and balanced at all ESUSD schools.
The staff also provided an update on the district's transitional kindergarten (TK) program. ESUSD has gradually expanded its TK program in recent years, adjusting birthday requirements each year. Next year will mark the final phase of this rollout, allowing all students born from September to June to enroll in TK. As the rollout continues, TK enrollment is expected to stabilize.
Additionally, staffing levels have remained relatively consistent in recent years. In 2024, the district experienced a net loss of 3.5 teaching positions due to the conclusion of temporary COVID funding. However, ESUSD added 10 full-time classified employees across various positions.
“We are pleased to see consistently high levels of retention among both our students and staff,” said Dr. Jason Johnson, Superintendent. “Our programs, support, and community are what keep families and educators here year after year. These trends represent the positive environment we have created for both students and staff.”
