EL SEGUNDO, CA — El Segundo High School has been recognized as a 2023-24 Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Distinguished School.

The recognition honors schools committed to increasing student access, engagement, and achievement in their PLTW programs. To be eligible for the designation, ESHS had to meet multiple criteria in the 2022-23 school year, including the number of PLTW courses available to students, the percentage of students enrolled in PLTW, the percentage of students taking more than one PLTW course, and efforts to ensure equitable access to PLTW courses.

ESHS is one of just a few hundred high schools nationwide to receive this honor. Specifically, the school was recognized for providing broad access to transformative learning experiences for students through PLTW Engineering and Biomedical Science pathways.

“We are thrilled that El Segundo High School has been recognized as a Project Lead the Way Distinguished School,” said Dr. Melissa Moore, Superintendent of the El Segundo Unified School District. “We are dedicated to providing our students with the opportunity to pursue a high-quality STEM education. This recognition is a testament to our commitment to providing students with the skills needed to succeed in an ever-evolving world. We are fortunate to have a tremendously generous business partner in Chevron for supporting this program in ESUSD.”

PLTW high school programs prepare today’s students for the careers of the future by incorporating STEM skills into their learning while also building students’ collaboration, teamwork, and communication skills so they can be ready for whichever path they take.

“We are honored to recognize El Segundo High School for its commitment to providing students with exceptional educational experiences while ensuring equitable access to PLTW programs,” said Dr. David Dimmett, PLTW President and CEO. "We congratulate the school on this achievement and celebrate their dedication to empowering students with the knowledge and skills to succeed, not only in STEM subjects, but also preparing them for future careers and life outside of the classroom.”

ESHS established four learning and career-exploration pathways in 2012 to motivate and engage students by connecting challenging academics to demanding career and technical education. Students must complete all four pathway courses sequentially to be eligible to wear the pathway sash at graduation.

Also earning this prestigious distinction from PLTW are Center and Richmond Street Schools.
