The following message from ESUSD Superintendent Melissa Moore was emailed to families, employees, and community members on Dec. 17, 2021.
December 17, 2021
Dear ESUSD Parents and Community,
I am pleased to share that it was a peaceful Friday in ESUSD today.
Out of an abundance of caution, there was a strong police presence at our schools. I started my morning off at El Segundo Middle School to visit sixth grade classes. I personally observed and spoke to two police officers at the middle school the first hour of the morning. Thank you to El Segundo Police Department for their additional efforts today to provide a reassuring presence to our community!
Holiday Message
The holidays serve as a reminder to count our blessings, so I want to express our gratitude for your role in being a part of El Segundo Unified School District. ESUSD is a successful district due to the unwavering support of parents and community. On behalf of the Board of Education, I thank you for all you do for our students. We have a significant number of parents who volunteer throughout the district serving on PTAs, serving on school site councils, supporting fundraising efforts, donating supplies to classrooms or local causes, or simply offering to help. Your involvement matters as you positively impact our students to grow and develop into productive citizens.
Board of Education Reorganization
On December 14, 2021, the ESUSD Board of Education held the annual reorganization meeting. At the reorganization meeting, the Board sets the meeting dates for the new year and elects new officers among the existing Board of Education members. The election of officers resulted in the following assignments for the 2022 calendar year:
Board President: Tracey Miller-Zarneke
Vice President: Dieema Wheaton
Clerk: Paulette Caudill
Member: Michael Wagner
Member: Emilee Layne
Board members also have committee assignments and school site assignments that may change for 2022 as well. That information has been shared with our PTA Leaders and principals.
Commendation for ESUSD Performing Arts Educators
The Performing Arts are alive and well in ESUSD! In November, El Segundo High School Drama took the stage for an entertaining production in the Performing Arts Center. The month of December was filled with the joy of holiday song and music. Board members and I were honored to attend some of the student performances that reflected the tremendous talent and hard work of not only our students, but also our faculty. Our school district is fortunate to have such a talented team of educators on staff. I would like to commend the dedication and commitment of Glenn Sidwell, Rosalind Darbeau, Tony Bancroft, Gianna Summers and Bill Flaherty. In addition, stay tuned for upcoming choir performances at the elementary schools next month: Rebecca Wright and Karen Carver both have been working hard with our students to provide heartwarming winter performances that will uplift our spirits in 2022.
Join Our Team!
Dedicated employees are critical to our schools and students. As we enter the new year, El Segundo Unified School District is in need of substitute teachers, instructional assistants, cafeteria workers, and custodial staff. If you, or someone you know, would enjoy working in our schools while also having flexibility in scheduling, please apply online at: https://www.edjoin.org/elsegundousd#. Further questions can be directed to Dr. Melissa Gooden, Executive Director of Human Resources, at [email protected].
As a fresh start awaits us all in the coming new year, I remain optimistic that a brighter future lies ahead for our students. Thank you for your patience, grace and understanding throughout 2021. I wish you a holiday season filled with love, laughter and peace. We look forward to welcoming students back to school on January 3, 2022.
With Gratitude,
Melissa Moore, Ed.D.
