ESUSD Superintendent Melissa Moore distributed this message via email to parents, ESUSD employees and the community on 01/12/21.January 12, 2021
Dear ESUSD Families, Employees and Community,
At the Board meeting this evening, the Board of Education heard a comprehensive presentation regarding the opening of TK-2nd grade Hybrid School and a review of the recent Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (DPH) recommendation to TK-12 Schools. The Board engaged in a thoughtful discussion and considered all information available to them, which included but was not limited to: elementary survey data, health and safety updates, exposure management data, public comments, employee and community feedback, and all content shared in the presentation. The Board of Education approved the recommendations for in-person instruction for a short-term basis as follows:
- Pause TK-2nd Grade Hybrid School
- Pause Athletic Conditioning
- Pause High Needs Hybrid Stable Cohorts
- Continue 1-on-1 Special Education Assessments
- Continue to provide childcare at The Learning Connection and allow for new enrollments to meet essential workers’ needs
- Allow PSAT administration to 11th grade students at ESHS on January 26, 2021
It is important to note that the word pause is used deliberately, as it is the school district’s intent that this action is simply a temporary stop and momentary hesitation only. This recommendation is in effect through February 1 with the caveat that ESUSD extend the pause of in-person services if DPH guidance is such. This action is not a reflection of the hard work all employees have demonstrated to follow the DPH Health Orders, nor of our confidence in our abilities to ensure students and staff have a safe environment. However, it is necessary due to the current crisis COVID-19 has placed on our hospitals within Los Angeles County. Whether we like it or not, right now we live in the global epicenter of COVID-19.
Thank you for your understanding. Our county is at a critical juncture and the school district must do our part and support this DPH recommendation. I am confident in the ability of our educators to ensure our students continue their growth in a virtual format during this temporary pause on in-person instruction and services.
Take care and be safe,
Melissa Moore, Ed.D.
